In the 1930s, Phillip, a student priest discovers he is bi-sexual when he is seduced by a fellow student in the seminary. Ordination does not impede his deviant behaviour.
Two sisters, Dorina, a devout bride of Christ and Selena, the abused child of their incestuous father, Alfredo, give birth to sons. Each is unaware of others plight, and the deviant priest responsible for the insidious betrayal of the sisters is protected by the church. In order to keep her child Dorina is forced to marry the brother of her defiler in a reprehensible arrangement instigated by the elderly, though good intentioned Father Murphy, who had been Phillips mentor.
Selenas son is adopted by a loving childless couple, but murder and a series of tragic events follow and the child suffers psychological trauma making his placement in a foster home difficult. He is eventually placed with an impoverished farming couple who have a daughter of his age. He thrives in this dysfunctional family till tragedy again disrupts his life.
Dorina has a series of mental breakdown and bears another two children. She and her children are ostracised by her parents and her husbands family. Perplexed and disturbed, her bastard son stumbles through a series of emotional debilitating ordeals.
The sons of the priest are coincidentally, institutionalised in the same orphanage for a short time and a symbiotic bond develops between the two boys, although neither is aware that they are brothers. They are separated, but a parting gift from one to the other is a transcendent event for the receiver.
The saga begins in the latter years of the 19th century when Jacob, a student Maronite priest emigrates from an impoverished homeland as detailed in his diary. Jacob arrives in a new land with high expectations and has six sons and six daughters. One sycophantic son, Phillip becomes a priest.
Alfredo, a drunken oaf returns to his homeland a few years after WW1, leaving his wife Millicent and their two infants to follow in steerage on a luxury liner at a later date. Millicent utterly detests Alfredo and reluctantly enters into a salacious liaison with a steward on board the ship as she is desperate to escape her abusive husband. To finance her escape, Millicent is persuaded to sell her beautiful baby daughter Dorina, to a barren Duchess travelling first class on the same ship. Millicents plan unravels and the cost defines her treachery.
The intertwining narrative of the patriarchs children and the unique characters who interact with Dorina and Selena are intermeshed with the illicit affairs which are forced upon the two sisters in their quest for survival and happiness. The consequences for the sons of the priest, who each struggle to cope with prejudice and the emotional upheavals, which are forced upon them are chronicled within the mores of a conservative and intolerant society.
